My Life as a Care and Support Assistant at Ridgway House

My Life as a Care and Support Assistant at Ridgway House

By Liz West

When I started working for Olympus Care Services, Ridgway house four years ago, I really didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t want a ‘normal’ 9-5 job.

After I was offered the job I spent two weeks training. I was really surprised how thorough, relevant and interesting the training was and how friendly everybody was. My training has continued throughout my time here at Ridgway so I always feel confident in my abilities.

Once my training was completed, I was ‘buddied’ up with experienced staff for a couple of weeks until I and my managers felt that I was ready to ‘fly’ on my own.

My peers and managers were and still remain very supportive and are always on hand should I require any help or support.

Working in this role not only gives me an opportunity to really support people and make a difference to their lives every day (however small or large), but I feel valued by my managers and Olympus.

I work a mix of early and late shift and cover all the needs and requirements of our residents during this time.

A typical early shift would begins as I walk through the door and I’m greeted by the smiling faces of our residents.

After handover from the previous shift, I start by assisting residents to wash and dress through guidance, encouragement and support where necessary whilst continuing to promote their own independence where possible.

We then move through to breakfast, where a breakfast of choice is provided and I sit with the resident providing assistance if required and ensuring that they are happy and settled before I move on to my next resident.

Once breakfast is completed and all residents are happy and settled, it’s time for activities for those that wish to join in.

Bowling, baking, arts & crafts and quizzes are always popular and of course everyone’s favourite….prize bingo!

Lunchtime is a homely ‘family dining’ experience where residents and carers sit together to enjoy a delicious home cooked two course meal. We take time to enjoy our meal over chats.

After lunch I assist with making residents comfortable again and once again we enjoy activities but these tend to be a little more relaxed like enjoying an old movie or browsing through photo’s, magazines and newspapers.

I am always on hand throughout the day to assist residents with their needs and requests.

I love my job at Ridgway and my role gives me the opportunity to support people and make a difference to their lives but to also feel valued as a member of staff.
