Shared Lives Success

All names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals.

In June 2015 Shared Lives received a referral for Dorothy following the impending closure of Ecton Brook residential home. Dorothy who was currently living at Ecton Brook had lived in a residential setting ever since she lost her husband in 2007. Dorothy had a breakdown and spent a short time in St Marys as she had no family members.

Whilst living at Ecton Brook Dorothy isolated herself and was very reluctant to mix with others. The only time should would come out of her room was at meal times and had not left the home for many years.

Sophie, a member of staff, who was working at Ecton Brook at the time applied to become a Shared Lives Carer and had recently been approved by the Shared Lives Panel. As Sophie had known of Dorothy, we thought maybe this would be a good placement and arranged for a formal introduction with Shared Lives manager Emma, Sophie and Dorothy. Many subsequent meetings were arranged to ensure the match was appropriate for both parties.

When Dorothy visited Sophie’s home she did not wish to return to the care home and arrangements were made for her to move in ASAP. Since moving in, Dorothy has achieved so much. Given she had no coat or shoes when she arrived, she now regularly goes out in the community with support to the shops, she goes out for meals and has asked to go to bingo. She has been to see the doctor and had a full medication review and is happy to now attend these appointments.

On occasions when she is left for short periods of time, Dorothy has a Lifeline, a 24/7 personal alarm system which gives both Sophie and Dorothy peace of mind that help is available at the touch of a button. Dorothy is now part of the family and enjoys visits from Sophie’s family and friends.

It was also agreed that Dorothy could have some PA hours to give Sophie a break in the day. Dorothy is now also planning a holiday as she would like to go to the seaside and will get the support to choose where she would like to go and the PA will also support this.
